society plus makena skirt review

I was already pretty excited when my dear friend Kaitlin invited me out to dinner for my birthday…when she casually added that she’d be borrowing a fancy camera, if I wanted to take some photos, you know I was all in! It was the perfect opportunity to show off a great new skirt from Society+.

The Makena skirt is a flowy chiffon skirt with an elastic waistband. It’s a deep navy with white polka dots. I actually don’t own a lot of chiffon, so I was delighted by how light and lovely this skirt was. It drapes and moves beautifully, and it’s super comfy. Kaitlin and I took a walk from my apartment down to the lake, and I was totally comfortable the whole time. It’s very breezey, great for casual strolling when you’re a fancy lady.

It can be easy to forget how lucky I am to live so close to Lake Michigan. People who have never been here before are always shocked at how big the lake is, and how untouched the lakefront is. We’re lucky that past generations have protected the lakefront, so today it’s full of parks and trails and beaches and open for everyone to explore and enjoy! These photos were taken at South Shore Park.

Comfy and classy, this skirt is awesome for the office. (Check out my guide to pinup style in the workplace here!) I considered pairing it with one of my many work-appropriate blouses, but since you already see so much of that on my Instagram, I decided to go with a more casual look for this shoot. Instead, I paired Makena with my Feminist t-shirt, a sunhat, and some statement earrings from my July Pinup in a Pack box.

I definitely get the convenience factor of an elastic waist, but I’ve always preferred a standard waistband. I feel like it looks more finished/polished, especially since I pretty much always tuck my shirts in, so the waistband is always on display. On the Makena, the elastic is very matte and subtle, so it doesn’t bother me much. It definitely makes the skirt especially comfortable.

Sizing wise, I took a little bit of a gamble with this one. I’m right between sizes, and knowing that the waistband was elastic, I could have sized down, but I was worried about being unflatteringly squashed (cuz…elastic). As is, the skirt is a bit looser than I usually wear, but that’s not a bad thing either. It’ll definitely be good for days that I don’t feel like strapping in.

I had so much fun out doing a mini-photoshoot with Kaitlin (there are many, many, many laughing photos that didn’t make it into this post)…hanging out with my bestie, enjoying a beautiful summer day, and getting to play model: pretty much the perfect birthday!

I’m really impressed with the quality of the pieces I’ve gotten from Society+ so far, and it seems like a great brand for plus size ladies looking for pretty workwear. If you want to be a polka dot princess like me, you can get your own Makena skirt here. It’s Skirt Week on Society+, so use the code SAS10SKIRT to save $10 on Makena or any skirt through 8/10!

Huge thanks to Society+ for providing this skirt to me for review. All opinions are, as always, my own!

Any idea where a size 10/12 girl might get a skirt like this? You look lovely in it!

Thank you! I haven’t actually shopped from this brand, so I can’t officially recommend it, but this skirt looks super similar!

What do you think?
