how to choose a hair stylist

There’s a sacred bond that exists between a woman and her hair stylist. A good stylist is worth her weight in gold, and just with any other soulmate, it can be hard to find The One. Hair is a huge part of a lot of people’s identities, and even apart from the emotional attachment, it’s right there on your head all day, every day. You want it to look the way you want it to.

If you’re looking for specialty services, like fantasy colors or vintage-specific styles, the difficulty level goes up another few notches.

vintage hair must-have products (suavecita review)

It’s hard to deny that great hair is the delicious cherry on top of a pinup girl sundae. You can definitely rock a cute pinup look without doing vintage hair, but victory rolls or Bettie waves can give even the plainest outfits a pinup twist. Committing to a middy haircut and setting my hair every day was a major step in my ~Pinup Journey~, and the art of a great wetset is one that every pinup gal should know. If you want to do something right, you need the right tools, so today I’m talking about the Suavecita Wet Set, a trio of products formulated to give you a great set, the foundation to every great pinup hairstyle. Do they do the trick? Find out after the jump!

how to keep colored hair healthy & bright

In both real life and the online world, by far the most common compliment I get is “I love your hair!” Fantasy hair colors are so much fun and a great way to show off your personality, but cycle of bleaching, dyeing and styling can be rough on your lovely locks.

Friends, it doesn’t have to be that way! You can have beautiful bright hair that’s soft and healthy, without sacrificing your color. I’ve spent the past year+ with purple hair, and my hair is softer than it’s ever been. Here’s how I keep my colored hair healthy and vibrant between cuts!

One of the best things you can do to help preserve your hair color is to wash it less often. Because I do a vintage curl set every night, I wash my hair once a week with a color-safe and sulfate-free shampoo. I’m currently using L’Oreal Paris EverPure Sulfate Free Color Care System Moisture Shampoo (what a name!)…I don’t have a particular attachment to it, but I feel like it’s served me well and is available at Target for a reasonable price!

Approximately every other week, I like to do a deep conditioning hair mask to help everything hydrated and lovely. This is another one that I don’t have any particular brand loyalty too; I usually pick up whatever is on the shelf. I’ve used a Neutrogena Deep Recovery Mask and recently picked up a Tresemme mask, and both of them have done a wonderful job of making my hair ultra-moisturized and silky smooth. It’s kind of hilarious to see how my hair naturally forms in near-ringlets after doing a mask.

Absolutely crucial to the brightness portion of the “healthy & bright” hair is Overtone. I did a full review of Overtone, but the short version is that it’s color and conditioner all in one. Your hair actually gets healthier while you refresh your color and, bonus, it’s vegan! Depending on how my color is holding up, I like to use the Go Deep Weekly Conditioner (I’m currently using Extreme Purple) either each week or every other week to give myself a nice purple zing.

The last ingredient in my recipe for healthy colored hair is Suavecita Argan Silkening Serum. It may seem like you could skip this step but don’t! I went through a period of time where my sets weren’t working out the way I wanted, and I realized that it had been a while since I used my silkening serum. Next time I washed my hair, I made sure to run a pump through my damp hair and voila – problem solved. This oil isn’t greasy, and it is seriously the best smelling thing I put on my head. Some oil treatments make me feel like I smell like a salad, but I wouldn’t mind a perfume in this scent!

My last tip is something that I know isn’t achievable by everyone, but makes a huge difference: I never use heat on my hair. Heat not only damages your hair, but it can fade your color like WHOA. See here:

When you’re already spitting in the face of the hair gods by pouring chemicals all over your head, I find it wise to avoid other sources of damage. If you must use heat tools, make sure you use a heat protectant!

That’s the inside scoop on how I keep my dyed hair healthy. Any other candy-colored babes have tips? I always love new tips, tricks and products to try!

keep living that fantasy (overtone review)

I realized the other day that I talked about what my purple hair means to me on the blog, but I never actually talked about the thing that keeps my purple rockin’ day in and day out.

Any gal with fantasy hair knows the struggle of trying to keep your hair bright while still trying to keep it healthy, but despair no more! You can make your colorful hair last longer AND make it look less like straw at the same time!

The answer is Overtone.

Overtone is a color-depositing conditioner that magically adds color back to your hair every time you shower while giving it deep hydration at the same time. How cool is that? You can use it to keep your already-colorful hair fresh and funky, add it to bleac

hed hair as a dye, or even layer it over your natural color for a fun tint. After I dyed my hair purple for the first time, my color disappeared like a ghost. I started using Vibrant Purple Overtone, and until I got my hair redone a few weeks ago, that was my only dye. It packs a serious punch!

My loyalty is to the Go Deep Weekly Treatment. I had been buying the full “system,” which includes this weekly treatment and a daily conditioner, but honestly, I don’t feel like I got the oomph I was looking for out of the daily treatments. I only wash my hair once a week anyway, so the weekly is just fine for me. I like to wash my hair in cool water, let it dry, and then apply the Go Deep to my dry hair for maximum intensity. I let it sit for half an hour or so while I’m noodling around and watching TV, then I give it a rinse and voila! Color bright and fresh, like it’s just been done! I do also do an additional deep conditioning hair mask about every other time I shower, just to help heal the hair further.

The other day, one of my coworkers asked how I was doing my color. I explained about Overtone and she said, “I could tell…your hair is really bright, but it doesn’t look damaged.” I couldn’t ask for a better testimonial!

Overtone is vegan and smells delicious and minty, instead of like chemicals, which I love. If you’re using one of the vibrant or extreme colors, you definitely do need to wear gloves when you apply! I have learned that lesson more than once. I will say that it is a little pricey, but compared to the cost (both $$ and effort-wise) of constantly redoing your hair, I feel like it works out as a savings. I highly recommend Overtone to anyone with fantasy hair or who would like to add a little fantasy into their life! It’s easy and it works!

(This post is not sponsored in any way, for the record, I just really love the product! But if they wanted to send me a few free tubs, I wouldn’t complain.)

the middy files: two week report

Everyone wants to post about a shiny new thing, but usually the real truth comes out after you’ve lived with it for a while. So after I got my middy, I decided I’d check back a few times to keep all of you in the loop on my experience. Prepare for a bunch of pictures of my face.

Am I glad I got the middy? Definitely! I will admit that after the first wash when I saw how much length I really had lost, I panicked a little bit. My first set was definitely a bit of an experiment – I used the same rollers & pattern that I’d always used on my longer hair, and struggled to get my shorter hair to wrap properly around the rollers. While the results weren’t bad, it definitely wasn’t quite what I was hoping for.

I was hoping for something a little more “Marilyn,” so I poked around for some inspiration and ended up deciding to try pincurls. They’re a heck of a lot more work, but I have to say that I love the results.

I definitely feel like I’m able to get a lot more body in the places that I want it, and that front swoop? The middy just makes my hair WANT to go that way, which is absolutely fabulous. I’m still struggling a bit to get the back just how I like it (the curls tend to fall out quite quickly), but overall, I love the shape that I get through a somewhat messy Marilyn inspired pincurl set. (I’ve been using this pattern from VaVoom Vintage as a starting point.)

The biggest “struggle” of a middy is that it’s not a wash and wear style, but thanks to the natural wave of my hair, I don’t think it looks too bad unset. It isn’t #hairgoals or anything, but I wouldn’t be embarrassed to go out in public with it either. I’m really pleased that I made the leap, and I can’t wait to keep pushing myself and trying new hair adventures!

Let me know if you have any questions about the middy cut, or if you’d be interested in another check in a little ways down the line!

belle blossoms beauty box review (july)

Hair flowers are often the perfect cherry on the expertly crafted sundae of a pinup ‘do, but I’ve always been a little shy about wearing them. I was never really sure which ones I should buy or where exactly they should go, but when I saw that Belle Blossoms was offering a special custom beauty box for the first time, I decided there’s no time like the present to take the leap!

Belle’s Beauty Box from Belle Blossoms is a magical box of surprises! Each box contains 3-5 vintage accessories, ranging from hair flowers to jewelry. You fill out a little survey so your box includes something perfect just for you, which I absolutely loved! That personal touch is something you don’t get from other subscription or surprise boxes.

Special delivery indeed! My box came on Saturday morning, and I couldn’t to tear into it and see what surprises I might find.

20160709_102428

I really felt like I was getting a present when I opened the box! It was such a nice, special touch that made the whole experience feel even fancier. And once I unwrapped that ribbon…

20160709_102459

A veritable BOUQUET awaited me! You should have seen my face when I unwrapped the package…I might have gasped a little bit. The box also came with a card to explain what was inside, but of course I opened it up first. I didn’t want to ruin the surprise!

How about a little modeling?

20160709_12001120160709_120005

The big red zinna is a fabulous statement piece, and as you saw, I immediately wore it out to the Blue Ribbon Beer Run that very day!

20160711_18005120160711_180058

The survey asked what color your hair was, and I am absolutely OBSESSED with how gorgeous these purple and white blooms look against my hair!

20160711_17591720160711_175931

Another gorgeous cluster of flowers…the pink of this one is such a lovely match to the Evelyn dress I wore today, and I think this piece will look especially good with a new dress that I have on the way right now!

20160711_180343

I also received a chiffon scarf in my favorite color – green! This is actually my first proper chiffon scarf…I have a few of my grandmother’s vintage scarves, but no nice square ones for hair styles!

20160711_184717

I also received this beautiful floral bobby pins, a pair of spider earrings, and (and!!) a hanging flower storage ribbon, which I think is just the cleverest thing ever. As a new owner of hair flowers, I definitely need someone to store them all! What a great idea to include it in the box!

As you can probably tell, I was absolutely enraptured with my Belle’s Beauty Box! It was an incredible deal and so much fun to open it up and see what surprises were inside! Everything I got is lovely and well-made, and I’m so looking forward to wearing each piece. I hope that there’s another beauty box offered for next month, because I definitely want another one!
