6 vampy dark lips for pale girls

The bulk of my lipstick collection centers on reds and pinks, but when the weather gets colder, I’m all about a glamorous dark lip! Berry, plum, or even black lips are a great way to add instant drama to any makeup look. Fall and winter are the perfect time to experiment with a vampy lip, so today I’m sharing my seven go-to dark lipsticks. Best of all, five of them are drugstore!

Lipstick swatches

Left to right: Vintage, Double Crossed, Up the Bass, Haze, Plum This Show, Alien

NYX Liquid Suede in “Vintage”

As if the name wasn’t reason enough for me to buy it – Vintage is a lovely deep plum color that’s great for a night out but not too dramatic for the office. I really like the Liquid Suede formula overall; it applies nice and creamy and dries fairly quickly to a velvet matte. It lasts very well, though I’d plan to touch up if you’ll be eating anything too oily.

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in “Double Crossed”

I believe this one is exclusive to the Little Vices collection (read my full review here), and it wasn’t one that caught my eye at first blush. But the metallized dark plum has definitely grown on me. It can be a little patchy in the first coat, but it has a solid wear for a cream lipstick, and I really like the shimmer.

NYX Matte Lipstick in “Up the Bass”

This cool-toned purple is my go-to when I’m in an “all purple everything” mood. It’s definitely a true purple, so it feels a little extra daring in the office (though I’ll admit I definitely have worn it to work in the past…).

NYX Matte Lipstick in “Haze”

I don’t wear grey lipstick often, but when I’m feeling like a STONE COLD FOX, this is the one I reach for. I feel like Haze is a lot more approachable than you would think; it’s a warm grey that I think comes across very neutral on my pink-y, pale skin.

Rimmel London Stay Matte in “Plum This Show”

This one almost didn’t make the list – I actually really hate the scent of Rimmel lipsticks. It smells like plastic and fake charries and makes me think of cough syrup, but I do really like this color once it dries down and the smell fades. I feel like it reads a lot more red/pink in the swatch, but it’s a nice burgundy IRL.

NYX Liquid Suede in “Alien”

There are so many black liquid lips I have yet to try, but right now this is my go-to. I’ve tried other drugstore black lipsticks and been very disappointed (looking at you Katy Kat Matte), but this one goes on smooth, opaque, and ultra-black. Perfect for when you need everyone to know what a fine goth chick you are.

Before writing this post, I just went and grabbed my favorite/most used dark lipsticks out of my makeup case – I didn’t realize until I put them all down that it was over half NYX! What can I say…I love getting a lot of color for a low price, and NYX lipsticks have always delivered for me. It’s great to have affordable options for more experimental colors, so you don’t feel like you need to shell out $15+ for a single bullet of a color you may not ever wear again.

I’m always looking for new lipsticks! What are your favorite vampy colors?
