When I first started to get interested in pinup style, I had no idea where to begin. All the perfectly put together ladies I saw online were intimidating…it seemed like I had no choice but to go from zero to Bettie Page in a single bound. And that definitely wasn’t going to happen!
But looking back now (seven years and a lot of learning later), I know how easy it can be to start making small changes one by one. Not only is this a good way to dip your toes in the pool and feel cute instead of like you’re in costume, but it’s also the most budget friendly way to get into pinup style! Here are 5 easy ways to take pinup style for a test run.
Does anything say “vintage” quite like a beautiful string of pearls? But you won’t get any sideways looks rocking pearls today! Jewelry is definitely one of the easiest ways to start working more retro flair into your look. Although novelty jewelry is especially popular in the modern pinup community, stick with classic pieces if you’re still a little nervous.
This style of shoe is very popular and easy to find in mainstream shoe stores and just happen to be a pinup favorite! You’ll know that you’re drawing inspiration from the 1940s, but everyone else will just be admiring your cute shoes. (Click here for more retro shoe porn!)
You don’t have to be dolled up from head to toe to try one some pinup style. A pair of high-waisted shorts paired with a cute t-shirt is definitely a pinup outfit staple, and there are plenty of super cute vintage-inspired shirts you can check out.
If you decide you want to keep exploring pinup style, you’re going to be doing a lot of winged eyeliner, so you might as well start practicing now! A gentle flick at the end of your eyeliner is totally standard for every day…let that wing get bigger and more dramatic as you gain confidence.
Feeling a little bit bolder? A hair flower is on the more dramatic end of accessory choices, but in the era of flower crowns you don’t have to worry about being too over the top. A pretty single blossom is always a great addition to a special occasion outfit; if the traditional behind-the-ear placement feels like a bit Too Much for you, flowers are also great at the base of a ponytail or nested in an updo.
If you’re a wannabe pinup, here’s my challenge to you: pick one of these and give it a shot! There’s no time like the present to take the first step toward something you really want. Once I started incorporating more retro/vintage style into my everyday life I wondered what took me so long to go for it…don’t make my mistake! Make sure to tag me (@pennysnark) if you give it a go – I’d love to see!
IF you liked it, pin it!
