2017 year in review

The further I get into adulthood, the more aware I am that time is a construct and means nothing. Wasn’t it July yesterday?  But no, it’s the end of another year. Another one bites the dust! And what would be the end of the year without a “year in review” post from your friendly neighborhood blogger? Come along with me after the jump to read about my year, see my personal fave looks of the year, and more!

The Year in Review

I’m sure no one is surprised to hear that 2017 has been a weird year for me. There have been a lot of personal successes and good experiences, and I’ve had a great time continuing to improve my blog and make new pinup friends. I did my first pinup contest, did photoshoots with friends and my first pro shoot, and I saw one of my icons, Dita Von Teese, perform live. I met so many lovely ladies from Instagram IRL! But man…it’s hard to say it was a good year when so much of it was also spent in anxious distress, filled with horror at the world we live in. On the plus side, that horror also led me to attending my first protest, first rally, and continuing to be more politically aware and involved than ever before. I feel like when we look back at 2017 one day, everyone will just kind of be like “…damn. That was a crazy year.”

In 2017, I learned that I was tougher than I knew. I really figured out my hair, and I definitely improved my nail game. I created less than I wanted to, but I tried to be better about being nice to myself too. I went to weddings, got promoted, and made some big steps in making my apartment closer to the home of my dreams. Last year was the first year that I really took solid steps to improve my mental health, but I feel like this year was the one where I really hit my stride and started a regimen that worked for me. I think I did really well on my 2016 goals – I achieved almost all of the concrete ones, and I think I did fulfill my major goal of saying “yes” to new things and doing my best to live as my best self.

Top Outfits of the Year

It was super weird to look back through my outfits all at once like this! I feel like this was a year that my own personal version of vintage style became much more solid. There were a lot of through-lines in silhouettes and patterns and colors that I gravitated toward this year.

I think I leveled up a lot as far as accessories go this year! That’s an element of fashion that I’ve struggled with in the past, but I was really pleased to scroll through my year of outfits and see a lot that really felt like complete ~*ensembles*~.

I purchased a lot less clothing in 2017 than I did in 2016. Obviously having more clothes to start with makes it easier to avoid buying new ones, but I’d like to think that I’ve also followed my own advice more and picked up pieces that helped complete and extend my wardrobe.

Obviously I couldn’t do a best outfits round-up without including a few looks from my spooktacular 31 days of Halloween challenge! That whole month was a huge highlight for me fashion-wise, and I’m definitely planning to try to experiment more with other challenges and such to help keep fashion fun and exciting all year long.

Looking Ahead

Honestly, when I first started trying to think of resolutions/goals/what not for 2018, my mind went blank. It’s been a really intense past few months, and right now a lot of my mental energy is going toward trying to complete work projects. But you can’t have a year in review post without future goals, so here are a few things I want to do in 2018.

  • Write more fiction
  • Do better at keeping my space clean
  • Travel somewhere not for work
  • Improve my blog
  • Do more non-writing creative projects

I’ve found that my repeated New Year goal to say “yes” to more things and have more adventures has continually served me well, so I’m going to keep that one in play this year too! Life definitely gets more fun and exciting the more you challenge yourself to face your fears and insecurities. I’m hoping that 2018 is a good year for me as well as a better year for the world in general.
